Hafren House is situated in Welshpool, the “gateway to Mid-Wales” and a bustling market town with the busiest sheep market in Europe.
Powis Castle, a medieval castle rising dramatically above the world famous gardens (much loved by Prince Charles), is about a 20 minutes walk from our house (5 minutes in the car). Built by Welsh princes and now home to the Earls of Powis, the Castle houses one of the finest collections of paintings and furniture in Wales. The Second Earl of Powis’s sister married Clive of India’s son and a beautiful collection of treasures from India is displayed at the Castle in the Clive Museum.
The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway weaves its way through the delightful Banwy Valley. It was originally used to transport sheep, cattle and locally grown timber from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool Canalside through the town centre. The line has been reclaimed over the years by a group of dedicated enthusiasts, the engines polished and carriages painted to gleaming perfection
Shrewsbury, the County Town of Shropshire, is approximately 18 miles away. Shrewsbury has been called 'England’s finest Tudor town' with good reason. Black and white properties are everywhere with over 660 listed buildings all linked by ancient shuts or passageways. It is worth taking an official Town Tour. You can shop to your heart’s content with many individual shops and boutiques throughout the town centre and even two large modern shopping centres.
Approximately 40 minutes away is the Ironbridge Gorge, the birthplace of the industrial revolution. This world heritage site boasts the world’s first Iron Bridge and many museums.
The area offers some great walking, with Rodneys Pillar and Offa’s Dyke on the doorstep. Dramatic Snowdonia is only 45 minutes away.
